Pick up in Belize City is usually around 8:30 a.m. Drive up the Northern
Highway for about an hour. En route you will view savannas, jungle and
bird life. Arrive at Altun Ha Ruins (Mayan for Rock Stone Water) which is
located 31 miles north of Belize City near Rockstone Pond Village on the
old Northern Highway. It was a major ceremonial trading center that
linked the Mayan villages of the Caribbean coast with those in the interior.
A carved jade head representing the Sun God, Kinich Ahau was discovered
here. It is the largest carved jade object in the entire Maya area. Return
to Belize City. Embark on a tour of historical Belize City where the main
Belize City landmarks such as the Supreme Court building, the museum,
and the oldest church in Central America will be pointed out to you. Lunch
is your choice.
