Caye Caulker is a quaint little fishing village island located on one of the literally
thousands of Caribbean islands that dot the Eastern coast of Belize, most of them
uninhabited. Of the few inhabited ones, Caye Caulker is the second most
populous, with a total resident population of about 2000.
Due largely to its fishing roots, this charming and sweet little island village
destination offers plenty of peace, tranquility and relaxation. If you are looking to
"go slow", this is the destination for you. On Caye Caulker, inactivity can at times
be the main activity.
Caye Caulker is located approximately 20 miles north of Belize City and is
accessible by high-speed water taxi or small plane. In recent years the island has
become a popular destination for backpackers and other tourists. The Belize Barrier
Reef, the second longest reef in the world, located to the east provides excellent
snorkeling, fishing and scuba diving.
The laid back atmosphere of Caye Caulker is something you must see to
appreciate. There are over 40 "hotels", and many restaurants and shops, but Caye
Caulker remains friendly and easy-going, avoiding the commercialism of other
destinations. Shoes are a no no, and the golf cart mode of transportation is unique
and fun. You can get all over the island very easily by boat, golf cart, bike or by
walking.
You will note in many establishments here a sign that says "no shirt, no shoes, no
problem." That axiom is true of most everywhere on the island. The ambience is
ultra casual.
