CAYE CAULKER BIRDING
A birder's paradise, Caye Caulker boasts over 190
species of resident and migratory birds. The Caye
Caulker BTIA (Belize Tourism Industry Association)
operates a mini-reserve consisting mostly of litorral
forest on its one and a half acre compound next to
the airstrip. It also offers a resource center inside its
building near the beach, as well as a library and
conference facilities. Visitors can also enjoy slide shows
and other activities at the center.
Near the airstrip, in the mangrove swamp marshes of
the area, crocodiles thrive. Although it is rare to spot
crocodiles on the East side of the island, closer to the
Southern, less inhabited part of the island they come
ashore sometimes. The Western part of the island is
said to be a thriving incubator for crocodiles.
Many native species of trees such as the sea grape
and cocoplum trees also abound.
Your guide will pick you up at your hotel at 6:30 a.m.
Take a walk down the south part of the island where
the local species of birds will be pointed out to you.
Your guide will then take you for a walk through the
BTIA mini-reserve where the local species of trees and
birds will also be pointed out to you. Water is included.
